EMBRACING DIVERSITY THROUGH CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL EDUCATION
The African American Heritage Museum Of Southern New Jersey brings to life the African American experience of the 20th Century as it documents the struggle of one group of Americans to carve their own place in the wider cultural landscape.
With a permanent home in the heart of Southern New Jersey, and a traveling museum with access to over 3,000 historical and cultural artifacts, the museum offers a unique opportunity to open a window to the mindset of successive generations of African Americans and provides an understanding to its cultural evolution.
...over 3,000 historical
and cultural artifacts.
BRIDGING THE GAPS IN OUR COLLECTIVE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
The African American Heritage Museum boasts an impressive collection of items, including graphics, drawings, paintings, advertisements, household and decorative items, all depicting blacks in a historical context.
In a decade-by-decade account, from Aunt Jemima to Tiger Woods, the museum provides a visual and visceral understanding of how the African American culture has evolved and changed, each item providing the proverbial thousand words.
...committed to bringing its
resources directly to the community.
LIFTING THE VEIL OF IGNORANCE THROUGH EDUCATION.
The African American Museum is committed to bringing its resources directly to the community. Special programs with curriculums tailored to children and adults of all ages are available to schools and non-profit organizations.
Often accompanied by the museums founder, the irrepressible Mr. Ralph Hunter, the traveling museum is entertaining and interactive. The museum even offers a student program, which will train your schools own students to guide younger students through the museums displays.

THE AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MUSEUM
Founded by Ralph E. Hunter, Sr., and supported by a coalition of area businesses, education professionals, collectors and community residents, the African American Heritage Museum has sprung from a dream.
Over thirty years ago, Mr. Hunter began a personal collection of African American cultural, artistic, and media images that inspired the museum. It started with a discovery in a North Carolina antique shop. Tucked away in the back was an original edition of Little Black Sambo by Helen Bannerman. I bought it to take it off the market, Mr. Hunter says. But his goal was not to hide it - just the opposite. His dream was to display it in an effort to preserve history and transform his treasures into an exhibit. After more than three decades of acquiring pieces, the collection now numbers in the thousands, and Mr. Hunter is committed to sharing it with others.
